Conservation Incentive Announced The Crawford County Soil & Water Conservation District has announced incentives for the implementation of cover crops and riparian buffers. These conservation practices help prevent/reduce erosion; provides reduction in nutrient runoff; and other environmental benefits. Funding for both programs are limited and will be funded on a first come first serve basis. The sign-up begins May 21, 2007 at the Crawford County SWCD office. The program, open to all Crawford County landowners, offers a payment of $8.00/acre for cover crops with a cap limit of $100.00 per landowner. The cover crop must be established between October 9, 2007 and October 31, 2007. The SWCD is offering an incentive of $100.00 to landowners who enroll acreage into the Farm Service Agency’s CRP Riparian Buffer. This practice includes the planting of trees along perennial streams; intermittent streams; and sinkholes in both cropland and marginal pasture land acres. The buffer may be 20’ to 180’ wide immediately adjacent to these areas. This payment will be issued at the time that the CRP contract is signed. If you are interested or have any additional questions, contact the SWCD office at 812-338-3224. |
